CHAPELS

On the east of the walled village a number of chapels were built by local families, perhaps in honour of traditional deities, some probably late in its history, possibly after Akhenaten’s death (Bomann 1991). Their role seems to have extended beyond simply that of worship, and within the courtyards animals were probably sacrificed and small crafts, including spinning, conducted (Hecker 1985; Kemp 1987b, pp. 33–36). Organic preservation varied but potentially provides the opportunity to examine the activities conducted within them.
